Destinations in Bavaria

 Im Damenhof

The Augsburger Land region between the Danube valley and the Unterallgäu has a variety of great places to visit. Mozart's family came from "Stauden", the picturesque hilly area in the south of the region. In the Wittelsbacher Land region (ancestral castle of the Wittelsbach dynasty) between Augsburg and Munich, the traditional Bavarian scenery provides a delightful backdrop for walking and cycling tours.

Sisi's Road

Sisi's Road links palaces, towns and other places of importance in the life of Bavarian-born Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, who, as a young girl, was known by the pet name of Sisi. As well as architectural monuments and historical townscapes, the route takes in museums and cultural events, hotels, restaurants and legendary cafés. Augsburg marks the most westerly point on Sisi's Road.

Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle

King Ludwig II's world-famous castles stand proudly against the spectacular backdrop of the Alps. Neuschwanstein, his fairytale castle, is the most-visited building in Germany, and was designed to resemble a medieval German knight's castle.

Rothenburg would be incredibly Kitsch if it wasn't real. It's old, it's medieval and was not built to please but just built as a town to live in. Now, however it is a sort of a disneyland attraction you should not miss if you are into this kind of thing. On the Romantic Road going through the south of Germany, Rothenburg is a must see.

A walk through the city is just like a "time tunnel". Not only stately towers, massive fortifications and patrician houses but also the historical festivals will bring you closer to the spirit of the middle ages. Rothenburg is most busy during Christmas times, when there is a Christmas market in town. May and September can also be pretty crowded.

With its churches, cheeses and culture this region is shaped by its rural setting. It has lush green hillsides where cattle graze, and a chocolate-box landscape familiar to all.

Oktoberfest

There simply aren't enough superlatives to describe Munich's world-famous Oktoberfest. Held on the Wies’n fairground from the middle of September to the beginning of October, the festival is opened with the traditional cry of "O'zapft is" (the barrel is tapped).
